Default Fat Boy Lower Forks

My 2005 aluminum? lowers look like hell. What can be done to refinish them aside from chrome? I was recently told that powder coating them looks really nice, and its a long term fix. Any comments and/or pics out there to help enlighten me?

Powder coating will cost you about 75 to 100 bucks give or take a dollar. I did mine and don't regret it at all. You can sand, prime and paint them yourself, it's a lot of work and not as durable as the powder coat but a lot cheaper. If you decide to DIY make sure you use self etching primer and one guy I seen on here used high temp paint I think It's a little tougher.

Polish them. They turn out real nice. I used paint remover first to get rid of the clear coat the start with 400 grit wet/dry then to 2000 grit then aluminum polish like mothers. Takes a few hours but well worth it.

KumaRide, Has maintaining them been difficult? And by the way, what is the make/model of your solo seat? I love the look of the solo seat and plan to get one eventually. I will want one that does NOT bring me closer to the tank, with a lower profile and most of all.... large enough for my bubba butt.... ugggh.

They are easier to maintain then the stock clear coat, painted/pc and chrome lowers. They will not rust like chrome. If they get a scratch or a small nick, you can just polish/sand it out. Aluminum is a soft metal so the clear coat does add a little protection but shows chips and scratches that can not be removed. Since polishing them I have not done anything to them other then wash with the bike.

The seat in the sig is the stock 06 seat. Replaced it with a C and C Sport Tour which moves me back, lower and is A LOT more comfortable then the stock seat for me and the passenger. CandC also makes solo seats. Not that much $$ and worth every penny. Contact DrVtwin.com, he is on this site, for pricing.

I used The High Temp engine enamal to paint mine, Powder coating is the way to go if you have the funds, I was in the middle of redoing the whole bike and just couldn't squeeze out the doe. if you don't want to powder coat them I deffinitly would use the Hightemp engine enamal, it looks good and holds up well, simply pull the wheel off, scuff the lower forks with a red scuff pad real good and spray the high temp paint. I only have about 700 miles on my bike since it's been put back together, roughly 200 miles of that is in the rain. and the forks still look like I just sprayed them.

PC is tough. If you decide to paint, PJ1 Coatings makes a Fast Black epoxy paint. I get it at the local indie shop for $9.50.
Most the black on my Shovel is powder coat. Done in '95.
