Only draw back to welding it is if it wears out? Then what? Have to cut and then weld again and then you take a chance of ruining your chrome.

Oh my!! Can't take that chance of ruining chrome....... LOL! I thought you just drilled a couple holes thru the bars, set the internal throttle housing in place, and weld up the holes to hold the housing. Shouldn't be too hard to drill out the welds again later if necessary. Besides, wouldn't the switch housings cover any discoloration from the welding? Well, unless you went with a GripAce......

Spot welds should be easy to drill out.

If what wears out? The Exile is such a nice piece it will not wear out. You can open it up and grease teh bearings is necessary, but I greased mine before I put it Together and the grease was so thick it was hanging the throttle up. this unit is made to be run hard. The cable can be changed without taking the sleeve out of the bars.

Drew,

Just so that I am clear...

If I go with the Exile throttle set up, it would be better if I order the bars with out dimples? Do I understand that right? If yes, no welding just drill and use the set screws?

This is the direction I am going so I need to know which bars to order. I am going with the 1.5 in Flying Apes. So any additional advice is welcomed

Watch for different lengths and diameters on the internal throttles. I picked up one on eBay that is 1" dia. And 4 3/4" long. Doesn't work with any standard grips. So I called exile and spoke to Russell about their setup and decided to go that route. Their throttle is 1 1/8" dia and 4" long to work with all stock hd size grips. I must say it appears to be very high quality also.

I went with Todd's cycle chubby bars, standard dimples, but got them raw so I can do any welding, filling, etc. necessary to set everything up right. Haven't received the bars yet, so hopefully it goes as planned!

Get the non-dimpled bars for the Exile internal throttle. The set screws will hold it firmly in place. You will need to get new grips as the standard grips have the throttle cable boss' on the right grip. Be sure to get the cable from Exile also as it has an adjuster on the carb/throttle body end. If you have a throttle body, you will need to use a dremel or similar to reduce the diameter of that fitting to insert into the mount. No wirries as there is plenty of meat there to work with.

TxOutlaw is right. Get exile grips and they will work perfectly as well. If you are getting non dimpled bars and keeping your switch housings I guess you can drill the bars further in to run the wiring internal. TI had to weld as I had dimpled bars. The dimpled bars make for very little support for the intenral throttle after chopping off 4" of the bars.
