I've done this on metric bikes I've owned in the past and it works fairly well and, of course, does reduce rpm's. Low end seemed hardly affected at all.
I'm glad to see this, been hoping for a good while someone would offer it. With the 6 spd trannys out, I figured I would not see it. Your speedo would be a little off.

I think this is how the Baker DD6 does the over drive, with the primary
sprocket. Since the overall transmission to rr/wheel speed doesn't change
it would not affect the speedometer.
It does sound like the easiest way to slow down the cruising rpm.
Better gear ratio for the starter too . . . Hmmmm . . .
