Simple to change any H4 bulb on any non-fairing bike:
1. Unscrew and remove the trim ring - be careful if you haven't done this before because the light will want to flip out of the bucket.
2. Unplug the light fixture from the harness by pulling straight back (pull only on the plug, not the wires)
3. Remove the rubber moisture seal. Note the alignment first to ease in replacement.
4. You'll see a wire bail holding the bulb in place. One end has a small loop. Press down on the small loop and swing the bail away - it just rests in a catch. Don't mess with the screw on the bail.
5. Remove and replace the bulb. It only goes in one way, so note the alignment of the old bulb first. Be sure you don't touch any of the glass part on the new bulb or you risk it breaking down the road. Clean it with alcohol if you do.
6. Put the wire bail back in place.
7. Replace the rubber moisture seal and ensure if fits properly in the channel around the outside. You'll know what I mean when you feel it.
8. Plug the harness into the lamp assembly and place the lamp assembly back in the bucket. It only goes in one way, and alignment tabs will show the way (and the HD emblem will be upright). Have the trim ring close by because it goes on next and you don"t want the lamp dropping out be fore you get it on.
9. Replace the trim ring. Simple as that.
Start to finish is maybe 5 minutes. Also, you can use any H4 bulb you want, but anti-vibration lasts longer. And contrary to advertising, lower kelvin values are MORE visible to your eye than higher at least above 2000k. Think about it. You see the yellow lights on a cop car a lot easier than the blue ones. Lots of testing by the military proves that soldiers see best between 3200k and 4000k and illumination flares are designed to put out this value. A word of warning to those using the Sylvania car bulbs - they work just fine and I use them but read the packaging first because it warns that the Ultra series last only about half as long as the standard bulbs do.
I use the Sylvania Silverstar ULTRAS on my bike and all my vehices. Big difference. JC
I currently have a 2010 Softail Custom. Other than installing a light bar with driving lights, is there anything aftermarket in the way of a bulb replacement that would help get more light on the road? Everywhere I look, all I see is the stock 55/60 watt lights. The improved bulbs that I see are all H3 -H4 replacements. Is there a way to incorporate those improved bulbs using the stock bucket? Or am I pretty much SOL unless I change out the whole front lighting system?
