Hey guys I needs some help... I've been talking to Kevin at DK Custom Products and was asking him why don't they have coil relocation kits for softails cause they have a bunch for sporties... Anyway he says they have a guy with a laser CNC or they can make it in house. The idea is to come up with something functional, pleasing to the eyes, and a reasonable price. So I need some pictures if you guys don't mind helping out and maybe we can come up with something to help out me alnd all the rest of the softails that wanna get rid of that seat post.

I would like to see the kit come with the wire extension, plug wires, mount (bracket), and anything else you guys can think of??? Like a slot or some place to hook up the choke cable for us guys with carbs?

Who knows I may even get to try out the prototype??? We'll

I relocated my coil and did a write up with pics and everything a while back, check my profile for threads that I started and you should see it easily.

 

I would be interested in buying one. I don't have the skills or the time to make one.

Ash... Thats what I was thinking... We'll see what kinda of ideas we get and go from there.
I also want it to be simple like doing it without removing the tank...

Here's mine.

 

I'm at work right now so these are the best pictures I can give. As for the how to:

1. (optional) Consume first adult beverage.
2. Remove seat.
3. Disconnect negative batt terminal.
4. Remove bolts holding the top of the seat post.
5. Remove all connectors and wires from coil.
6. Remove coil from seat post.
7. Remove lower bolt on seat post.
8. remove seat post and cut off the section that holds the coil. Being sure to leave enough material to drill a 7/16" hole.
9. replace (?) or discard the seat post
10. Quench thirst if desired.
11. disconnect horn.
12. Remove horn and horn cover leaving the chrome thingy behind it on the bike.
13. Mount the piece you cut off of the seat post to the coil and hold it up to the aforementioned "chrome thingy"
14. Mark the location of the hole to be drilled in the cut off piece.
13. Drill said hole in the piece you cut off of the seat post.
14. lengthen wires for coil power supply as needed
15. mount as seen in the pictures below.
16. connect all wires and be sure to replace the two bolts in the top of the oil bag.
17. re-connect the battery and re install the seat.
18. Do what you please with the horn...mise is a paperweight now...
19. start bike to make sure you arent a moron and screwed stuff up.
20 Smoke a cig.
21. Call Lisa out to see the free mod!
22. Recieve frugal husband hug.

should run the extended wires thru back-bone, so the tank needs to be lifted...when i did mine i already had the tank off for a swap...i dig the idea of a coil relo kit, yet i rather do things myself when capable, and i'm sure you (story) and many other think the same way, even being something simple as cutting a rectangular piece of metal and drilling some holes on it...

ash16, it's that you ain't got the time...not much skill is required...you do need a grinder or dremmel with a cutting wheel, a drill, and some sanding paper

 

The best one's I've seen, are the ones you can't see at all. I would personally like to put both my horn and coil where they aren't readily found. There have been a couple of threads on coil relocation, but they are hidden within threads entitled, "seat post removal" or "seat post deletion" or some such. A couple of people have put them up under the bike, in front of the mud guard. You wouldn't have to remove your tank to get to the coil, you would have to get up under the bike. The wires would have to be extended and run under the tank, in this case. Another guy did a write up of how he relocated his coil in between the cylinders, but I would imagine that you would have to remove the tank to get to that one.
