I have a gps unit that I want to put on my heritage.(tom tom 335) I have ordered the ram mount but I am trying to figure out the best way to wire it. I have read that you shouldn't wire the unit directly to the battery. Is there a way to wire it without wiring a cigarette lighter adapter or do they make cables specifically for that?
I'm hooking mine up by taking the cigarette lighter adapter apart and wiring the red wire to an under dash wire that is carrying 12 volts (fused) and the black wire to a ground wire. I'm ending up with a wad of wire but it will fit, I hope.
Don't you need the power reducer that is in the cigarette plug from the gps? the male end? it is my understanding that it reduces the power from 12v to 5v before it reaches the device.
I hooked up a GPS to my Heritage. I bought a cig lighter with a wiring harness at Radio Shack for $9 and wired it directly to the battery. Ran the line under the tank ( you have plenty of ways to snake it under there ) and it works perfectly.

Yes
At the very end, where it goes to the cigarette lighter is a red and black wire. There is a PC board up stream to the GPS unit. It was originally a part of the cigarette lighter plug (which I dismantled to reduce the size). I wrapped the PC board as best I could to protect it, and tied up the excess wire. If it were not for that board, it would be possible to shorten the cable.
I had not thought about running from the battery. That would eliminate the wad of wire under the dash. I think I will run directly from the battery!

Install the cig lighter, you can get nice chromed ones that look good. I installed one on mine, works great. I can charge my fone if I need to, power my GPS when nessary, even made a cable to go from cig plug to cig plug to jump start the bike (beats havin to remove the seat).
It was really easy to install and has a ton of advantages, for me anyway.
I got mine in chrome, discounted from a buddy's store. I think it cost $70. Took all of about 10 minutes to install.
