Default up the creek.

I am new, so hi all!

Need advice. Am restoring my first Softail (91) and found the transmission case is cracked. I found a tranny for sale, but the year is unknown. It looks almost identical to mine, the seller says that its for a softail, but I see a little opening on the sellers case about where the serial number is on my case.

careful study of the pictures indicates that all the bolt holes, openings, and shift controls are in the same place other than that little opening mentioned above. Its on the upper left side of the case above the clutch cable cover but below the top cover. Its on the top of the case where it angles down to the back tire. 10-11 oclock position. I have seen web pages that show a little cover here with a single bolt securing it.

Has anyone experience swapping trannies that can help me out???

I am a vet with Sportsters, and TC88+, but am not too clever with softails.

Advice welcome.

Thanks for the boost ramhuner9. probably bad night for asking, but i cracked the case just today.

What kind of dumb@ss cracks his own tranny??? one who was tired and going too far, too fast with a press while extracting a bearing. I am too bummed out to enjoy new year at this point.

Happy new year to all however!

In the very center of the picture is my serial number on the tranny. The box I am looking at has a little cover here. What is that cover for?

I cannot get a picture of a case with a little cover where my serial number is.

From your description it sounds like you are describing the speed sensor hole...96 up Softails have electric speedos and the sensor goes there...if you use a mechanical speedo you can plug that hole.

Don't let it get you down man!! We have ALL done something that has resulted in BAD things. It will work out in the end. Also, when you get a chance, stop by the EVO classic section since you now have a 91, we EVO guys and gals have to stick together........Enjoy your new year!

Check the starter opening to. It may be larger diameter than the early one.
