I have an 08 Heritage and im considering doing the 103 upgrade.
Can anyone advise if its worth the $$? I know "worth" can be subjective, but its not a cheap upgrade, and im wondering if the increase in power is VERY noticeable.
Also considering just a stage 1 since its a quick and cheap upgrade from bone stock. Wouldnt expect a big power gain from that.
Is there anything say, in between the stage 1 and 103 thats a good balance of cost to performance?
A Stage I will net you about 10hp/10ft.lbs. You'll feel the difference but it won't shove you back in the seat. My previous bike was a 2002 Heritage with a hot 103" build. It was all SE with 260 cams, ported SE heads etc. It put out 104 HP and 107FP. When I kicked it from stop, I had to hang on and lean forward. Put a huge smile on my face. I kinda miss that bike but I was sure it was going get me in huge trouble.
I guess it all comes down to what you're looking for. If you want that extra low end torque to get you moving from a dead stop with a good kick to pass on the superslab, the HD Stage II 103" kit will do that. I have it in my Streetglide and love it. It's not as hot as my old Heritage, but it does just what I want it to do.
Leave it a 96", install cams such as SE 204's or Andrews 48, pipes (2n1 for best performance), hi flo a/c and a tune. This will be very noticeable and outperform a 103" with stock cams. Install the cams yourself - its not that hard with some mechanical ability.
I did the 103 and cams last year. I went with the se255's and even though not many other people will recommend them, they suit my driving really well. I think the whole package was worth the money, but don't expect to get a whole new bike out of it. I'm adding a PCV to round it all off this spring. I do agree though that you will notice more out of a set of cams than just a 103 alone, and I'm sure that a set of aggressive cams will be even more noticeable. What I notice most out of my setup is that I shift less, can finally use 6th gear, and have torque to pull out and pass without grabbing a gear. Hope that helps.

If you are going to do cams you might as well do the big bore as well. They will already be in the engine if you are reusing your pushrods. 103" and cams along with pipes air cleaner and tuner and the difference will be very noticeable.
I did the same mod as jlasoftail--103, SE255 cams, pipes and breather on '10 Heritage. I also echo what he said about the performance. I think it runs pretty good, but certainly not the hottest softail on the street. Certainly runs better than the 96 with pipes and stg I breather I had on an 07 RK. It is my hope that I have not sacrificed long term relialbility for performance. I clicked over 11K today and has been trouble free so far. It was a little spendy, but I am not disappointed.

That's part of the reason I went with the 255's instead of something a little more aggressive. Plus, it all depends how you use the power. Get more power, then drive it like a drag car and yes, you will loose reliability... But I think most will agree that a 103 will take you just as far as a stock motor.

good to hear, I probably don't run it as hard as I did the RK as it has good response without having to twist the throttle so hard.

All great replies. I appreciate the comments. Thanks. As for the above quote: Im curious, just installing cams would improve the performance that much?
Im not a wrench, so im asking..is that a big job? Expensive?
