Default Oil pump

Going to check a friends oil pump alignment on fatboy tc88b with 95" kit gear drive. Will we have to take pushrods out to align pump or can it be done by just taking off the gear on crank?I'm thinking this is the problem he was on a long trip and said bike started to shutter started to smoke and blew oil out of the air cleaner. Engine still turns over but he hasn't tried to start it since any thoughts
Would help.

just get to the oil pump bolts (remove gears) and loosen the pump bolts, remove two diagonal ones and install tapered studs (tappet block alignment studs) tighten remaining bolts (slightly snug) remove tappet studs reinstall other 2 bolts (use blue locktight, very small amount! Get this stuff in the pump gears, and it get hard, it will grind up into little ***** of destruction!). that said cuz I've seen too much put on and it did take out pump and cam plate. just use common sense. reinstall gears and you should be all set. you might bump motor (pull plugs with bolts slightly loose to center pump and then tighten,
