Default To engine guard or no engine guard

Are engine guards worth the money? I have an 04 Heritage I just picked up and was surfing for "stuff" for it. It currently has no engine guard. I know they are only for if you drop it or it tips over, but do they protect the tank at all?

I had them on all my metrics years ago, figuring if I dropped them on me I could probably at least get my leg out!

Thoughts?

Engine guards are well worth it. Besides the tank, think of all the cases. Primary, cam cover, and the engine itself. All those parts can really add up. I recommend an engine guard if you are thinking about it. They can keep your legs from getting crushed as well.

My bike is curently at Dr V-twin ungergoing a transformation - and I think an engine guard is probably going to be the next modification. The only question now is what one to use. I'm not a big fan of the mustache style so it's between nostalgic or regular HD. In any case, too much potential damage out there to not have one.

Is that your deluxe with the cream and light green tins that are going on? that paint job is simply gorgeous! A crash bar is always a good idea. I didn't put one on my ride until I got a foot clutch but it has been on ever since. And I do have pegs on it for me feet as well which is a nice added bonus.

There was a funny thread the other day about a guy who dropped his bike for the first time. I've had that misfortune several times. I am SO glad that I had engine guards. I have no damage.

You WILL drop the thing someday.

That's me. Your guys are doing a fantastic job - and I'm looking forward to picking it up today!

You'll probably see me often because projects like this are such a slippery slope. Just when I think I'm done . . .

Last summer I parked my bike in the driveway. It sat there for several hours. I had to leave for a while. When I came back, my bike was lying on it's side. It did not have a scratch. The engine guard saved it. Like stated above , it only takes one incident to see their value. Ride safe.

Their value is well documented for sure. But neither of my bikes has one, I don't care for the looks at all.
