Softail
Don't get me wrong...Dyna's are very nice looking bikes. But they seem to ride like a bigger Sportster. Now I LOVED my old Sportster...but there was a reason a wanted to upgrade to a more substantial bike. The Softail Deluxe and LO are fun to ride anywhere and I feel more secure when I'm out on the highway.
Hey There, here are my 2 cents
First, I used to race sport bikes and before my Softie, my last bike was 2002 R1 (that is 350lbs & 137HP rear wheel dyno).
When you buy a Harley, you want it to 'handle' certain things, enough to have fun, but you are not racing a sport bike , even a meager 1975 HondaCB will beat you, a 1986 Honda Shadow 1100CC will kick the butts of any fresh 96Motor.
Harleys are about 'FEELING', you ahve to 'FEEL' something looking at the bike, sitting on the bike , riding the bike.
The goldwing is a better tourer, most Star bikes are better cruisers, and any Jap street fighter is better and cheaper too, but you DO NOT FEEL ANYTHING on them, that is the point.
I have seen some very bad-*** Dyna's, some amazing Tourers and great looking softails.
For Bad-*** ... The Dyna's and Softail FXST(B/S/C/D) would be great alternatives.
For Classic ... You can't beat the Heritage, or the Springer heritage for that matter.
For Mighty old man biker look .. the Touring bikes are best with the infamous bat wing.
Now there are combos, like the XBones, or one-offs like the Rocker, but you just have to 'feel' what you like.
Forget the handling bla bla bla.. and power bla bloo blee, this conversation to me is like who is the tallest midget in the circus, and the circus of power and handling, Harleys are usually not very tall, but in the arena of pure Magic , they are the giants.
and now I feel that I sound like Charlie Sheen

Dyna is too much like a sporty on mild steroids.
