The engines are still incredibly simple allowing most people with the right tools and ability to do their own maintenance and repairs themselves.

Why change that simple design. The sound was just a byproduct.

Hmm, that's a good point. I do plan on learning to work on them myself. I don't think you can really get the whole experience without that. But during my reading, I've seen things about other bikes that make it seem like some newer designs are simpler, like having 8 gaskets compared to the HD's 60-some. Not being mechanically knowledgeable, it makes me wonder why some decisions are made.

The article does answer the question as to original purpose of the design. Remember that when these engines were first conceived, they had to fit into bicycle like frames. The simplicity and efficiency of design continued to be an advantage as the engines and frames grew in size. Eventually the nostalgia won out over technology to keep the 45 degree design as the hallmark of the Harley Davidson line to this day.

The engines are still incredibly simple allowing most people with the right tools and ability to do their own maintenance and repairs themselves.

True. The VRod engine is a OHC vs Pushrod, which allows for higher revs.
