Question What would you do?

Hi,

I'm making a $1000 deposit on a new 2011 Vivid Black Fatboy tomorrow. It is due to ship on May 2 so I have some time to think about what parts/accessories I'd like to add. I can get 15% off all parts/accessories installed at the time of purchase. I know for sure that I want to add matching grips, floorboard inserts, shift/break pedal and add highway pegs (probably mustache bar). At Americade, I'm going to get the vintage wide Mustang seat. I also plan to order the Bull Saddlebags made by Osprey. At some point I want to upgrade to better pipes/air, etc. So, my FIRST question is... Should I wait until the 1000 mi service to add pipes, etc. or get it right away at 15% off? And my SECOND question is... Are there any other goodies you would add...?? I'm not really interested in doing anything with the shocks...yet. Thanks.

15% off HD parts is a decent deal, but you can do better at some of the online places. Even pipes and what not, I am willing to bet that you can get a better price through forum sponsors like Dr. V-Twin than what your price will be at 15% off of dealer prices. If you are going to exercise their "deal" than I would just get the stuff you "have to have" that you or you and some friends can't install. Unless you are rolling it into financing. If that is the case, than I would do exhaust at a minimum....

I think I agree with brettnbama. Just let them install the stuff you can't do. It's really not that difficult to do most of the things you mentioned yourself and it's a great way to get to know your bike better. Also, IMHO...I'd do the Stage 1 engine upgrades first and the other cosmetic upgrades 2nd. You'll be kicking yourself if you wait on the Stage 1 and don't get the sound and performance you're expecting right from the start. You can do that install yourself too actually. HD will charge you for several hours of labor to do all those little things you're looking to do. That can get really pricey at $90/hr. Do it yourself and learn about your new bike. Good luck!

Ask them to throw in a free shop manual.
Since you have time before you can pick it up, check the part numbers @ Zanottimotor to see how much the dealers 15% off is really saving you.

Congrats on your new bike.

If I had a choice I would do stage 1 and pipes first. But buy them somewhere else like Dr. Vtwin. Then just ride the thing and do some mods here and there. Also if it were me I would NOT roll that stuff into financing. Again just me.

EXACTLY! Have the dealer put the pipes on and a stage1 and you will get your best savings there for sure at 15%.

As stated already, the grips, floorboards and seat accessories (I don't consider those mods) can be done by you or someone you know for next to nothing anyway.

Only roll it into financing if you have no choice. Good luck with whatever you decide.

First congrats on your soon to be new bike. You are going to enjoy it.

Question one should you wait to put your pipes on or put them on right away. I put my pipes on the second weekend I had my bike. Would have put them on the first weekend but did not have them from Dr. V-Twin yet. Bike had 145 miles on it when I put my pipes on.

Question two are there any other goodies to put on. YES, tons of them! But you have to go for the comfort things as well. Before I put my exhaust on I put my Shotgun shock air ride on and it makes a world of difference. You can set it for a firm ride or a nice pillow ride.

Also you may want to do the old handlebar trick. Sit on the bike close your eyes and put your hands and arms out where you feel the bars should be. Then open your eyes. Right now with my bike I am having to reach for my bars just a bit. But it is enough after 2 to 3 hours of riding my neck and back are killing me. Having a rough time going between ape hangers or beach bars. If you are reaching for your handlebars after an hour or so of riding your back and neck are going to be in pain. That is where I am right now.

Good luck with the new bike!

First, Congrats on the new scoot Amy.

I agree that there are better deals on the net every day than the 15% that the stealer is offering. I would almost bet that this discount is only on the parts as well. They really don't like to discount labor.

Then, I would ask if you are an experienced rider or new? I went through this with the Mrs a few months ago when she was asking for "pretty stuff" for her scoot. I asked why not get it running better and perhaps a bit more comfortable first. Since this was her first scoot, she said that she was more than comfortable on the bike, mostly since she had nothing to compare to and the bike had way more power than she could get used to in a short time.

To be fair that was 3 months ago and she is progressing well and now accepts some minor performance upgrades but she is very cautious about letting me add things that change performance or handling.

So if that is you, go with some bling first, but if you are a seasoned rider, a stage 1 trio of pipes AC and tuner would be great. Either way, I avoid the dealers and price the parts out first.
