I'm another one that swears by the Turtle Wax Chrome Polish...cheap and reliable. For the rest of the bike I use Re-jex wax. I've never had any issues with polish burning on the hot parts.
Every chrome polish I've seen uses some polymer in solution with petro bassed solvent. Works great. Waxes will work the same but will not last as long on chrome. So the wax you put on paint will be wasted money on chromed steal, aluminum, cast aluminum, billet alminume etc. Unless, you do a lot of waxing--then it does not matter.
I detail my bike every oil change. Thats three times a season (March-December) and my lack of constant care has given me a goodlooking 18 year old sportster, and 17 year old heritage.
I LIKE ALL OF MOTHERS PRODUCTS, ESPECIALLY CHROME POLISH. I DON'T WAX CHROME ANYMORE. 2 COATS OF MOTHERS AND A FINAL BUFF WITH A CLEAN, GOOD QUALITY MIRACLEFIBER CLOTH. I NEVER USE A SPONGE OR T SHIRT MATERIAL ON PAINT OR CHROME. I KNOW MF CLOTHS ARE A BLEND BUT CLEAN, GOOD QUALITY ONES SEEM TO DO AN EXELLENT JOB. 100% COTTON TERRY CLOTH IS OK. HOLD A THREAD TO A FLAME AND IF IT FLAMES, IT BE 100% COTTON & OK. IF IT MELTS TO A BALL, IT BE A BLEND AND NOT OK EVEN FOR WINDOWS. IF USING TERRY TOWELS REMOVE THE TAGS AND EMBROADARY, THEY WILL SCRATCH PAINT. I DON'T USE PAPER TOWELS,(wood product) ON GLASS OR PLASTIC TO KEEP FINE SWIRLS OFF THEM.
sort of on the same lines I usually hit my chrome atleast once a week with mothers, Like to keep it shinny. then I have been know to apply wax to my cold chrome parts, never tried the wax on hot pipes or primary case.
How do you remove the chrome polish from the black engine case when your rag slips while polish is being applied to the primary cover? With a gray engine case it didn't show up that much but my new heritage has a black engine case and the white polish is hard to remove from it.
MY HARLEY SHOP HAS AN ENGINE CLEANER THAT MADE MY "09, 96" HERITAGE BLACK PARTS AS CLEAN AS NEW OR BETTER. EASY TO USE TO REMOVE ALL WHITE STUFF, INCLUDING WAX. UNABLE TO FIND NAME RIGHT NOW BUT IF YOU WANT, SEND ME PRIVATE MESSAGE & I'LL GET IT FOR YOU.
Megiuars Quik Wax has Carnuba in it. (But Spray It On A Rag And Apply It) I use it on Engine covers, pipes, bars, paint, chrome, lexan what ever works great. Cost $ 6.75 a bottle
Furniture polish nailed it! When I drove a truck over the road a old hand taught me to use lemon pledge on my paint and wheels to keep shiny without all the time it would take to do it the real way. So as long as you do polish once in awhile you can cheat in between.
Thanks Guys! Good to hear no problems with residues being burnt on the pipes.
I've used wax on chrome, including my motorcycle exhausts for many years. It keeps them looking good and I have no complaints.
Then, the other day I was detailing my softail. I noticed I had some mothers chrome polish on the shelf. I don't really remember when or where it came from.
I used the chrome polish and to my surprise, I swear it works better than wax. The chrome actually seemed brighter than when I would use wax..
Not a scientific test by any means, but I am convinced now that chrome polish looks, and lasts, better than wax on chrome....
