While backing into the first parking stall, the side of a raised manhole cover in front of a busy coffee shop almost took me out. I didnt make any chimpmunk noises but felt every ligament streching while holding the bike a couple inches from the floor. I deserved a cigg after that.
I walked with a limp for a week but saved the bike.

Haven't had any close calls with deploying the stand, but I often ride off with it down. The hard scraping of metal on the pavement reminds me to pull it up. By the way, shoes with soles that don't slip help with manhole covers, that damn plastic they use to paint the street lines with, wet leaves, and oil leaked from some unfortunate vehicle. My friend warned me to use non-slip soled boot when I ride, it has saved me numerous times.
