Question Fuel prob's on 2000 Fatboy

I just bought a used 2000 fatboy. For the most part, I'm really happy with this bike, but it's got a weird problem that's got me a little worried. Before I take it to my mechanic, I wondered if anyone had any ideas about what this could be. I'll be tooling along, running just fine, when the engine will quit as if I've run out of gas. One time, I was pretty low and switching to reserve and starting it a couple times got it running again. However, the last two times I had plenty of fuel and it did the same thing. Stalled out and getting it started again was a matter of just restarting over and over until it fired up. Once I thought I smelled gas, like the carb was flooded, but that was the only time. This has happened three times, twice on LA freeways, so I'm relegated to side streets until I'm confident this problem is fixed. Any thoughts? Fouled jets? Something in the fuel switch? Like I said, I'm going to take it to the pros at my local H-D dealer to work over, but I was wondering what the forum thought.

Petcock vacuum hose leak, losing vacuum and shutting down fuel. Check vacuum hose at the petcock for starters. Petcock filter screen dirty, contaminated blocking fuel supply. Drain tank, remove petcock, clean screen. Trash in carb and getting caught up in needle blocking fuel flow. Remove, clean inspect carb. Electrical, spark problems....coil overheating. Do an ohms check and verify. Weak spark to plugs, bad plug wire/wires. Ohms check, verify. Losing contact at worn igntion switch on tank, causing bike to shut down while riding for no reason at all. Place swtich in ignition position, start up, and barely jiggle the switch and see if the bike shuts down. Know how I know all this. I had all of these problems with my 2000 Fatboy when I got it.

If the bike runs fine until you reach a certain level in your fuel tank, that's where I would concentrate my search... start with cleaning the petcock filter and checking the vacuum hose...
