Default 2005 springer ape hanger problem

I have a 2005 heritage springer classic that I installed 16'' ape hangers onto. The problem I am having is that they keep coming loose after I ride. The teeth on the bars sits in the hole on the riser to attach it to the fork so the teeth aren't biting on the clamps. Do I also need to replace the risers to aftermarket ones? Anyone have any good suggestions? Thanks!

Were the bars for the springer setup? My wife's bars just slipped earlier this week, and I just put a thin doubled sided tape around the knurls on it for trials. Does not slip in the garage anyhow after testing. Will update after on the road. Many people dimple the risers or drill and roll pin them or aluminum foil shims, etc. Search the Xbones posts for the most recent.

Yes the bars were for a springer and I also tried using a peice of tin rubber around the bars and aslo some tape. Neither worked. The risers couldn't clamp down far enough and came loose.

When bars slip I have normally been able to fix the problem with beer can shims or beer can shims over friction tape. Before I took the apes off of my Crossbones I wasn't able to get the powder coated pieces to grip until I raised a couple of dozen bumps with a punch.

If you've got the right bars and risers and nothing else works this may. Under the best of circumstances you're getting a lot of leverage off of those tall apes.
Good luck.

Take the caps off. Lay them on a piece of carpet (or something similar). Take a center punch and peen the inside of the caps. That's what I did. Problem solved. I have the same style risers you do.

I'm sure the other suggestions will work too. This is just how I fixed mine. Good luck.

I had same issue with my 2001 Springer. I tried small squares of window screen and that didn’t work. Tried JB Weld. Didn’t work. Tried boring a cavity in the top plate of riser and inserted a 5 sided screw in the bars that would set up inside the top of the riser cap. Kind of worked. But not perfect. Had move to still! The final fix, and it’s worked for 8 years running was taping out the threads of each riser and inserting steel threads. No more Ofer torquing. It’s rock solid. And that’s with only 2 bolts per riser!
