Default Sumax saddlebag bracket feedback please?

I'm looking for feedback from anyone that is using the Sumax bracket to mount a set of FL bags on their softail.

I know Cycle Visions has a similar bracket and the only difference I can see is that the Sumax bracket doesn't have a crossover bracket between the two sides.

Just wondering if this is an issue, do the Sumax brackets let the bags move around at all or anything else like that?

I don't know why but I think I like the cleaner look of the Sumax bracket not having the crossover but I would like to make sure that isn't going to lead to any problems down the road.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I am running cavalry fiberglass conversion brackets and they also do not have the cross bar and I have had no issues with them and do not for see any in the future. I can not flex them at all.

I just went to Calvary's website and checked out their bags. The strength test was awesome. I was going to buy Sumax, but these are $300 cheaper and look awesome. I am sold. Thanks for mentioning their name.

Good thing you asked.

My friend Bee bought Sumax bags and brackets for her Deluxe. It was a NIGHTMARE for her. The brackets did not hold the bags tightly and they bounced and cracked.

Part of the problem is the softail frame.

In any case, after months of going back and forth with Sumax and more and more problems, she ended up going with a bracket modification that utilized a crossover.

Please talk to her first, she'll be able to give you much more detail that will help, including her negative experience with Sumax customer service on this issue.

She has a Delphi forum here:

Her user name is kamalakate, known as "Bee" because of her yellow Deluxe.

Here is the specific forum thread where she goes into great detail about the Sumax bracket problems:

Studiopeg, thanks for the info, that was exactly what I was worried about.

I've had a look at both the Sumax site and now Cavalry Fiberglass and I wonder if the Cavalry ones are beefier but it's hard to tell.??

06flstfise says he can't flex his and they don't have the crossover bracket either.

Is there anyone else that has possibly seen both?

Thanks again to everyone.

I also have a set of cavalry bags on my '09 'Bones. I got them last August and the brackets that was sent with them were junk. There's just 2 bolts that mount the brackets to the frame horns holding the fender in place. There is nothing on the lower part of the brackets to keep the bottom of the bag from hitting the swingarm. The bags I got from them are the "wave" pattern and after talking to them numerous times on the phone, they say thats the only brackets they make for that type of bag. So now I have a set of $800 bags that hit the swingarm!

06 flstfise

Just an FYI: I finally got my Softail Deluxe back after it having lots of mods put on over the winter including Road King hard bags with Cycle Visions Tail Bagger brackets. I was able to get in one 4-hour ride before she broke down (another story).

I had my husband ride behind me the whole time watching the hard bags carefully for any sign of bounce or movement. Solid as a rock. I am extremely happy with this, although the brackets sure look ugly when the hard bags are off.

These are the brackets I am running.

so I am not sure what they are talking about mr1gebby, unless you are running non touring style bags, i.e. small fiberglass softail bags.

I have had zero issues with them. I have got over a thousand miles on them since I put them on. They have not shifted or sagged at all, nor has anyone who has rode behind me said they move. I am not saying the cycle visions are better or worse, these are just a good option for the price (note I did a low ball bid on them and they accepted it). If the price was closer I would have gone with the CV but I am restricted to only being able to buy mods for the bike when I sell take off or previous mods so this was a no brainer to me. I did my bagger conversion for the cost of the CV brackets alone.

Peg your bike looks nice by the way. I agree no matter what bracket you have once the bags are off the brackets look ugly.
