Got a good deal on a 2001 NT, however the oil has not been changed for 3 years!!!! However, in 3 years only 1500 miles. On my cars here in Vegas, change every 3000 and atleast one a year. Any recommendations for bikes. My plan is to change the oil today....NOT SYNthetic...run it for two weeks, drain and THEN put in Mobil1 Vtwin 20w50. Any suggestions for some experienced riders.
My wife got a 2001 Heritage in 2003 under the same circumstances. It was 2 years old and had 1,700 miles on it.
I changed the oil immediately, and then changed again in 500 miles. Went to 2,500 mile intervals after that. Bike now has about 15,000 miles and no problems to date.
Changed the oil this morning..looks like maybe another oil change after the documented recipts. Reciepts show a change at the Dealer, which indicated a HD oil filter, however, the oil filter I removed this morning was a Fram. Also bought a Sears motorcycle jack, and because my NT was lowered, the jack would not fit under the bike!!!!

Update:
Also bought a Sears motorcycle jack, and because my NT was lowered, the jack would not fit under the bike!!!!
I had the same problem with my lowered Dyna. put a 2x4 nestled against a 4x4 in front and a 2x4 where the rear wheel would be on it while the front was on the 4x4.
Got it up there and steadied it with the help of a friend while we slid the jack under it and used the tie downs to keep the bike straight. BTW, I wouldn't try to do this by myself and put the bike down on the kick stand while up on the blocks...there's not a lot of contact on the front when you turn the wheel and that creates a heck of a lean angle. BUT, you'll prob. be able to get by with just a 2x4 under the front wheel. Art
My wifes fatboy is lowered so I just put the back tire on a piece of 2 X 4 and slide the jack under with no problem at all. Way better than buying one of the $300 dollar jacks to handle this!
I change my oil every 2500 miles... if I don't hit that during the winter, I still change it every 3 months. PERIOD.
There's no cheaper insurance than a blood transfusion.
I had a 2000 sportster that had the same deal only 800 miles on it when I bought it in 2002. I put 2500 miles on it before I got my Fatboy. I rode it hard too, zero probs.
