I wonder if there are guys on the cop forums asking "What's a cool looking pretend vest? I don't want anything that has actually been tested to see if it will stop a bullet, I just want it to look cool."?
If you guy are going to the bother of wearing a Novelty Helmets, Why not just wear the real thing ? It makes no sense, you are more than willing to put fake chit on your head but you won't put the real thing on your head.
I have worn both and prefer a novelty. I do it because it feels so much better then a DOT helmet. It sounds to me like you are giving the OP **** when you should go play mommy with someone that cares. We are all grown adults here and can make our own decisions.
My SkullCrush helmet arrives tomorrow. Its not DOT but the construction is much better than the cheap ones you see at swap meets. I've got a polo coming. Not inexpensive, but supposedly hand made, etc.
I would have gone with the Outlaw low profile DOT but they don't make a true polo, just the lid with a snap-on visor.
Those are some nice helmets. I would think the fact that they are Carbon Fiber/Kevlar should add a little more protection than some of the other Novelty helmets. A little expensive though.
I've got both, rode with a cheap German style novelty for a long time. Wasn't real comfortable with the cheap plastic quick connect on the chin strap, so I went shopping for something a little better. Had I known about these SkullCrusher lids I probably would have ordered one, but I did find a German Style Outlaw that just so happens to be a DOT approved lid, and went with that. Not because it was DOT approved, but because I liked the way the helmet was built, that it was light weight, and how it sat on my head....
Don't buy into this DOT approved crap, there's a lot of cheap helmets on the market that are DOT approved and are total crap. They're untested but make the grade based on the chin strap retention used, and the thickness of the padding. Reading the construction spec's on the SkullCrusher lids, I would trust the well being of my head inside one of those over most of the other helmets being sold as DOT approved....
I'm a recently retired Fire Fighter / EMT, responded to my share of motorcycle accidents, saw guys with full coverage DOT helmets end up dead or brain damaged, saw guys with novelty lids crawl out from under their bikes and walk to my ambulance without as much as a headache. I would never ride without head protection, anything is better than nothing, a good quality novelty lid is better than a cheap Chinese made POS, if having that DOT sticker on the back means that much to you, then make sure it's also a good quality lid and not some cheap piece of Chinese crap that just barely makes the grade to get that DOT sticker.....
Like I said....if I wasn't already happy with the Outlaw lid I just got, I'd be ordering one of these SkullCrushers.....
I went down hard wearing a novelty helmet and aside from some road rash no problem, I went down hard wearing a novelty helmet and aside from some road rash no problem.... I went down hard wearing a novelty helmet and aside from some road rash no problem.
Ok, IDK Wear what you want, I have a non-dot Carbon Fiber I wear around town sometimes and a Shoei 3/4 heavy duty for heavy twisties. Understand the risks and make you own decision, it's none of my business what anyone wears.
