Somehow I've gotta figure out your secret...that is getting rid of one bike before buying another one

And, believe me, I've used excuses to get a new ride that were lame compared to wanting another gear.

Love 'em all, take no prisoners.

If you are happy with your bike have you considered just getting a 6spd transmission for it? Frankly I don't think the 6spd is that big of a deal, a 5spd bike will take you across the country just fine, they've been doing it for years. And still getting pretty good mileage to boot. Or do you just want the Victory?

I usually use 6th about 65-70 mph. Anything less than that and it's lugging.

Baker makes a 6 spd. overdrive gear set that installs inside your stock Harley 5 spd. transmission case. It's fairly pricey, but definitely cheaper than buying a brand new bike. I have a 2004 Fatboy with a 5 spd. and I swap bikes quite often with my buddy who has an 07 Road King with a 6 spd.. There's no doubt that for sustained speeds above 70 mph, the 6 spd. is definitely nice. Where you really notice the difference is sustained cruising at 80 mph. Less engine noise and less high frequency vibrations equals a more comfortable ride for sure. On the other hand, if you spend the majority of your time riding at speeds under 70 mph, it would be a waste of money.

Harley is having a ton of problems with STOCK motors. They changed the run out spec from .003" to .012" because of warranty claims. ( There are no warranty claims possible on a 107" or other modified bikes.) How many claims on STOCK bikes do you suppose it takes to make them institute a company wide change like that to avoid paying out to customers? Some big numbers got their attention!

Why does Harley no longer recommend the use of impact tools on compensators?

Why does Harley specifically not recommend "engine braking" anymore?

IMO are U looking for an excuse to get a new one..

I've just spent about an hr looking up the difference on rpm's and on crank info.

From what I've read there is not that much difference in the 5 vs 6 speed trannys in rpm's at hi-way speeds. I've read in here that its about 300rpm's. So I don't think its all that its cracked up to be.

As far a needing a newer bike with a 96'' and 6 speed I do know from having one that 6th is not usably till U put in some cams along with Ur stg1.
The stock stg1 96'er IMO just doesn't have the Umph to pull it.
After I put in the cams it a whole new ball game..

Also my son and I have around 20 others that he and I know and have rode with for the last 5ys, I don't know any of them that have had a ton of issues. Matter of fact none of them have had any problems with Cranks, bearing, comps, or any other motor issue.
Some with the 88 have have the tensioners replace with gear cams.

As I said I just watched all four of the Revolution's pod cast (below) on the new cranks to learn more.
As he said its not that the crank itself has run out, its the end shaft that the spocket goes on that out which is not machined, and He explaines why and that its not a problem with the new tolerance that moco put on it. Since the 96's have the new HYD tensioners, theres no need to go with gear cams now.

Heres some good teaching on HD cranks, It explains whats going on and explains it better than I could tell Ya in here..
If U take the time to watch them U will learn the reason.

I would go this way.
http://www.illusionmotorcycles.com/

It will drop you to about 2500 RPM at 75 on the highway. Much cheaper solution and if you do it yourself you can save the extra money for the downpayment on a "SECOND" bike.
