There's no doubt that for sustained speeds above 70 mph, the 6 spd. is definitely nice. Where you really notice the difference is sustained cruising at 80 mph. Less engine noise and less high frequency vibrations equals a more comfortable ride for sure. On the other hand, if you spend the majority of your time riding at speeds under 70 mph, it would be a waste of money.

That's what you need!

[quote=oct1949;8388799]IMO are U looking for an excuse to get a new one..

I've just spent about an hr looking up the difference on rpm's and on crank info.

From what I've read there is not that much difference in the 5 vs 6 speed trannys in rpm's at hi-way speeds. I've read in here that its about 300rpm's. So I don't think its all that its cracked up to be.

As far a needing a newer bike with a 96'' and 6 speed I do know from having one that 6th is not usably till U put in some cams along with Ur stg1.
The stock stg1 96'er IMO just doesn't have the Umph to pull it.
After I put in the cams it a whole new ball game..

Also my son and I have around 20 others that he and I know and have rode with for the last 5ys, I don't know any of them that have had a ton of issues. Matter of fact none of them have had any problems with Cranks, bearing, comps, or any other motor issue.
Some with the 88 have have the tensioners replace with gear cams.

As I said I just watched all four of the Revolution's pod cast (below) on the new cranks to learn more.
As he said its not that the crank itself has run out, its the end shaft that the spocket goes on that out which is not machined, and He explaines why and that its not a problem with the new tolerance that moco put on it. Since the 96's have the new HYD tensioners, theres no need to go with gear cams now.

Heres some good teaching on HD cranks, It explains whats going on and explains it better than I could tell Ya in here..
If U take the time to watch them U will learn the reason. /quote/

Thanks Oct1949...very informative and well presented too. If I need crank work someday I should give them a call.

What he implies make great sense. You're producing 300,000 motorcycles a year, so every minute counts on the production line towards the end of the year bottom line.

What he also says is that it's pretty tough to "break" a crank, even 07 and up.

Finally he implies that 99 to 06 buyers got lucky w/o knowing it at the time of purchase. (IMO)

Everyone should watch these segments that you provided. Thanks again.

Yeah the 99-06 dont have as much end shaft run out. But the 07 and newer don't have to go to gear cams to get rid of the tensioner wear problem..

He also stated that the gear sprockets on end of the crank can have a little run out (mine had .004, checked when they did the cams).
I like that he explained that the new limit that MOCO has now of .012 is not an issue, Well, unless U want to run gear cams, which I don't know why anyone would really want to now as their not needed now with the newer Hyd set-up. .

Great info and thanks.
Its a bunch of things.
1st the gear and yes thats fixable or even live able.
2nd I want more engine, also upgrade able but now add both and it starts to not make sense.
3rd the big one. Not really digging the classic look of my Luxe. Really like a smaller fender front and rear, smaller tire up front and bigger tire in the rear.

Going to look at Victory tomorrow. Have to admit that while hanging out with thousands of bikes this weekend in D.C. every time I turned for a double take it was one. Except for one time. That was a killer Iron Horse.
After that I seem to love the look of the Wide Glide. I guess I am just pissed that they did not make the Blackline more like that. Great bike but would really do well as softail.

Ride a stage 1 tourig bike, and you will never look back, not even once.

Does anyone like the two tone engine on the Blackline?

Now its about really finding the right one.
