Default Confused about engine torque?

Homework is almost done on which bike I’ll be upgrading to this winter and it looks like it will be the FXST. However I’m a little confused why the 96.0’’ Twin Cam engine would only have 8.8 ft. lbs of torque more than the 73.20’’ Evolution engine. Could someone please explain this to me, it just doesn’t make since. Seems that the BT engine would have about same power as the Evolution engine because the running over of the FSXT is about 100 lbs more than the XL.

Here is what is listed in the compare specs for both bikes.

Evolution Torque is listed as 79.1 ft. lbs. @ 4000 rpm
Running Order = 585

Twin Cam Engine Torque is list as 87.9 ft. lbs. @ 2750 rpm.
Running Order = 682

“IF” I understand your question correctly I believe that you may be confusing apples and oranges.
The torque output of an engine has nothing at all to do with the running order “weight” of any particular bike.
The output of the engine is just that, the output of the engine, and the weight of the bike is just the weight of the bike, nothing more or less.

The thing you're ignoring is, that 87.9 ft lbs is at 2750 RPM. That's what moves a bike around on the street. How much time do you think you're going to spend at 4000 RPM. Gimme' that low end torque any day.
