When you take off the switch housings you should always put a piece of cardboard in between the brake lever and the and the housing. You might not have broken your switch. Did you add new levers? Sometimes the tolerances on the levers are a little different and this can cause the same problem. Jiggle the lever a little and see what happens to the brake light. I have also heard of people threading a screw into the switch where the nipple is if it is broken off. The switch is $60.
My switch died while intact. Just old age I guess as the bike is nearly 10 years old.
