Default oil or fan cooler or somthing else.....

hey im getting my new 2011 fatboy in a month when i return from my overseas deployment ... im movin back to dc to be stuck in traffic .. so im thinkin about gettin a oil cooler or a fan like drew has ... question is which is better

any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated

I personally would just go with an oil cooler and no fan, but that's just me. The oil cooler is fairly well hidden and can't be seen all that well. Putting a fan on it makes it stick out more to the eye. Not as bad as a radiator, but. . .

First I gotta chuckle a little as me and 95yj were not on the same page about batteries the other day. Dude, I am not tryin to contradict you all the time. I am not sure the conventional oil cooler is going to give you what you are looking for if you are stuck in traffic inside the beltline on a day like today here in the SE. It needs some airflow to maximize its effectiveness. I think there are some gizmos with discrete fans that will pull air through an oil cooler that might be helpful. Guys have talked about them on this forum. A lot of debate about oil coolers, regardless of riding conditions. They certainly make fans for parading, but I will agree with 95yj on them being quite distinctive. I have been in that traffic and I can tell you on a week like this your bike is not gonna be the only thing hating life if you are stuck in traffic.

Another thing to consider is if you get a 2011 LO with ABS I don't think you can mount an oil cooler on the down tubes because the ABS module is there. I can't say for sue if it would be in the way or not as I don't run an oil cooler but it would be worth the time to check it out before you bought one.

I think these are pretty trick as long as you have a good charging system. I've never run one but if parades were in my future, this would be something I would be interested in.

Lived in DC area for 35 yrs...retired from Army civ job... believe me....get an elec fan. Lenale makes em if you cant fabricate your own. Oil cooler won't do it.

Where is Drew been waiting for him to chime in. He installed one that connects to the oil cooler andthe fan turns on when the oil gets to a certain temp. Wait I know what to do say drew three time in a row. Drew. Drew.. Drew...

Oil coolers will function like any radiator does while you are not moving. It will 'RADIATE' heat! For its size it has quite a large surface area to give of heat while the oil is pumped through it. Yes, of course it is more when moving. But it is not zero like many think.

A cooler engine runs stronger and lasts longer which makes it a very good $140 investment.

There are bigger after market coolers out there.

The biggest cooling effect that you can get is to add a fuel pack that puts the afr to the 12.1 to 1 that it should be. Not the emissions required 14.7 to 1.

The Cobra Fi2000r does that job for about $280. For a couple hundred more they have the Pro model that constantly adjust for gear, acceleration, altitude, load and more.

Last year in mid July, I and my sons went to Key West in the tropical heat wave that they were having. From Tennessee on it was from 100 to 105 each day.

My bike was a new stock 2010 Ultra. Even when caught for one hour in a traffic jam due to an accident, neither I nor the bike overheated. The ECM never activated the rear cylinder cut off mode. I'm 70 so you younger fellows should be able to handle it even better than I. Also, I was running 89 octane gas and not a ping at all.

I have added the cooler and fuel pack. Runs much stronger now and is even less likely to over heat. I will find out when I go through Death Valley in about two weeks.

Oh! I almost forgot about fans. They help but think of this. If I had a fan and was sitting for an hour moving one car length at a time, the fan that mounts where the horn is would have been blowing the hot air right onto my leg. That would have been a problem.

ok .... few options .....i like the fan that mounts on the side ..... i can live with it blowin on my leg ... sucks but id rather have my engine be cooler and keep from over heatin .... if there are any more options id love to hear em

It WILL not cook your leg .. that is nonsense. I cannot see how an oil cooler .. even one with a fan will prevent runaway overheat at idle. Newer EFI's have MOCO temp control where rear cyl is shut off at preset temp and seems to works like an air pump to cool thing down. Moot point for me .. I tossed the MOCO ECM. Attached pic is what I made in my shop ... I don't sell them. Other guys have made their own from my BOM. Might look ugly to some .. but that cowbell is no pretty sister IM(not-so)HO.
