Default Download vs. Race Tuner

I have an '03 Heritage Springer with the original stock pipes and air cleaner on it. I would like to do stage one to it and upgrade the pipes and air cleaner for sound and performance. I am getting mixed signals on weather I should just use the download chip to reprogram my system or purchase a race tuner and have the bike dyno tuned for the new flow. What is the best way to go about this?

Do the stg 1 and get the flash or rejet the carb, whichever applies. A tuner and dyno would be a waste of money for pipes and an stg I AC IMO.

The stage I flash upgrade is still EPA compliant, so on the lean side. If you really want to "fatten up" the fuel mixture and get full advantage of the mods, you should at least get an aftermarket tuner and their canned map. If you have the $$, get it dyno'd. Then you will know that you have gotten the full potential out of your engine.

I started out with Stage 1 and the "Download". Thought the bike ran ok, but it got hot.

Bought the SERT and had it professionally Dyno Tuned, what a difference!

Bike runs cooler and pulls better than ever. If you can find someone in your area that is good at tuning, IMO, that is the best way to go.
