I used what I think are regular size snap ring pliers - little bit smaller than lineman's pliers - and it was fairly little effort to get the retaining ring off. Beasley, do you have really small hands? J/K
rrambo, if you're not worried about the wiring, you shouldn't have too much trouble with the bar install. That's the part that I fcked up.
Not small hands, but the pins in my snap ring pliers would just pop out of the holes in the ring so I guess my pliers must be on the 'small' side. I'm lazy and prefer the right tools for the job and pliers with bigger pins would have made it a 1 minute job vs 10 minute.
Just got the call that my apes have arrived. Can't wait to get them on!
It might be awhile... I still need to get the cables. I plan on soldering the wires. I still need to get the rest of the parts and figure out when I can park the bike for a few days. Seasons are so short here, I hate missing out on any opportunities to ride.
Piece of cake, I did my Fatboy and my Street Glide. Fatboy was way easier to do. Buy the wire extension kit and speed bleeders and it will make the process much easier.
I don't mind soldering, but it will take a lot of time.. the link you posted won't work for my 2011 but this one will... and damn.. for 37 bucks it might be worth the time savings!!

which length do you think I would need for the 16 inch RSD apes?
I went 8" with my 14.5", you should go 12". I have a mind to do mine again with the 12" so I can run my wires back through the top of the triple trees. It is worth the money for sure.
