Default my first self service

i did my 5000k service myself and it wasnt bad at all. i just followed the manual. i used hd syn 3 20-50 engine and primary and mobil 75-90 in the tranny. i also changed the plugs and cleaned the air filter. my plugs looked very dark and i noticed the two black breather hoses under the air filter were both broke. the hoses were only $2.30 at the dealer but im not exactly sure what they do. the service didnt take long at all, i did have to make a run to sears for a torx rachet set. i cleaned her all up, put on the tender and covered her for the winter. the service was fairly easy and i actually enjoyed it. just turned on the garage radio and heat and went to work. i went on a short ride after fuel stabilzer and before putting her in storage and she operated a lot smoother. from now on i'll be doing service myself.

If you haven't yet, get a service manual for your bike. It's got all the info you need to do any kind of service to your bike. Getting intimate with your bike is the best way to get to know it, and the pride of knowing that you did it yourself too.

I did the 1000 mile myself, and I am getting ready to do the 2500 mile engine and filter change. I will wait until the 5000 to do the tranny and primary. I will probably stick with syn 3 in the engine, Formula + in the primary and may try Redline Heavy in the tranny, not sure though.

The shop manual is very helpful...

seems to me there is more to the service than just changing the fluid and plugs. At the 1000 mile service you primery chain shoiuld be adjusted as well as your belt if needed. factiory has these things loose on the break in peroid. on the 5000 there is much more involved like cabes and clutch jiffy stand and much more. correct me if im wrong but if changing your fluids is consider a 1000 0r 5000 maintance something is wrong with this picture

certainly, i plan on getting a service book to help me with the rest once spring comes around. what i cant figure out the dealer can. but honestly, i wonder if the dealer always do what they are supposed to do! and it was nice starting somewhere.

I agree what does the stealer do , better to do it yourself that way you know the service gets done.

That's pretty bad for Harley davidson that we the buyers mostly feel that we are getting ripped off by our stealers and most of the time its true. I wish Harley davidson would do something about it. They always send out a survey but how many of us fill them out. The thing is our lives are in there hands some time depending on what they are doing to your bike each and ever tech should have this pounded into there heads that if there not doing something they are supposed to it can cost us dearly. I feel the same way about my stealer I always think they are sticking it to me and I know so. The hours they charge for some things are off the wall. All I was saying is that to do a maintenance its more than just an oil change and plugs. Check out the dvd from fix my hog it will help your cause they advertise on this site
