...for my 5K service if I change the lubricants in the engine, primary, and tranny before taking the bike over?

I changed over to Mobile 1 V-twin in the engine from Syn3 at 2500 miles, and I like it better. I plan on putting it in the primary. I also want to replace the Syn3 in the tranny with Redline Heavy.

Since most service departments charge the book labor rate - even if it takes them less time to complete a job - it made me wonder if they would do a similar thing regarding their fixed cost for a twin cam 5K service. You know - even though they don't do the change, the price is the price. Besides, after checking the service manual, I think that I could do the 5K service myself!

They could but they prolly won't - Do a search around in here though man cause there is no reason why you can't do it yourself - Seems like lot's of folks do it themselves - I plan on doing mine on my own and I would even like to replace my own throttle and clutch cables - It seems like the more I try the better I am getting - I have made some mistakes for sure but nothing I have not been able to beat!

Get a service manual and do the 5000 yourself. The money you save on labor will more than pay for the manual and probably a bike lift.

They won't charge you less because if you choose the 5000 mile service they'll most likely do all of it regardless of what you've done. They won't take responsibility for your work so they'll do their own.

Buy the manual, do the work yourself and save a lot of $$$$. There isn't much to it, follow the service manual's recommendation for the work at 5k and have at it. You'll get a good feeling about doing the work yourself and saving a lot of money isn't all that bad either. One other benefit, is that you'll get a chance to look over a lot of other fastners and parts to make sure everything is still where it should be and tight.

Les

Before you take it to the stealer, LOOK HERE... SERVICE SCHEDULE It will tell you everything that needs to be done. You will get a better job done and you will KNOW it is done! Then you can buy the service manual and a lift and still have enough $$$ to go out to dinner.

It's really not difficult at all, and once you've done the oils like you said, there's not much left at all. It's not manditory that the dealer does this service for any reason other than to charge you for it.

Thanks, TC. I've already bought the tools (including lift) and service manuel. After two previous visits to the "service (yeah, I got serviced alright!) department" its just difficult for me to once again hand over several hundred $$$ to them for work I know I can do myself. I was worried about affecting the warrenty, actually.
