On the side of the tire near the tread there are little triangles spaced pretty far apart. When you see one of these that is the location of the wear bars. You can find the wear bar in the tread and if it's not below the tread it's time to at least start thinking. You can squeeze another thousand out of it but if you're planning a trip I'd say do it before you leave.

If I remember right my FXSTC's rear tire had little Harley emblems molded into the top of the wear bars.
If you can still see them your OK, for now.
But if you just see the bars are even with the rest of the tire surface, its time to get a new tire.
I don't make a habit of beating the snot out of my bike and tires but they still only lasted about 9500 miles.
If your riding style is average they may last longer.
But even if your really easy on them I wouldn't expect to get too far past the 10,000 miles mark.

As soon as I hit the wear bars I only had about 400 miles to spare. When you see second rubber you have like 100 miles till you get to the steel belt. Ive gone through roughly 15 rear tires.
