Default Holy petroleum jelly batman!

Wow,

Just completed a three fluid change on my 08 Heritage. Cannot believe I was quoted 1.5 hours from the local indy ($37.50) for each fluid.

Ended up buying the Amsoil and the O rings and gasket from him. Still cost me $100.00. Yikes!

It done now and feels good to do it yourself and save over $100.00 in labor.

U need to look around better, 5 Qts of oil and 1 filter should be no higher than $65.
I use 4 quarts total of Mobil 1 20-50 in Motor/pri. 1 qt of Mobil GL 75-90 and its usually around $9. a can.
I also use the black HD filter about the same $.

6X9 = $54 plus tax. for all 3 holes.

Heres the Tally

3 Quarts of Amsoil 20W-50 @ $11.95 = $35.85
2 Quarts of Amsoil 10W-40 @ $11.95 = $23.90
1 Quart of Amsoil SAE 75W - 90 @ $14.95
1 Chrome Drag Specialties Filter @ $10.95
3 O rings @ $.95 = $2.85
1 Clutch cover gaskets @ $4.95
Tax @ $7.71
Total: $101.16

Ended up with one extra qt of 10W-40 tranny fluid so should have been around $90.00

Hey the indy wants to eat too just like you do. I don't want to start nothing but I work on cars and trucks as well as some bikes after hours but it seems like there are some people out there who think we should work for free as if we charge labor to work on ones car we are ripping you off. I think it's great you did it yourself and if you want to save some bucks then thats the way to do it. It's a good thing to get to know your bike better.

O-ring if not torn can be flipped and reused....

still 6X $9 = $54 if U use Moble 1 and black filter......plus 1hr of Ur time.....

how much would you have charged somebody else if you were working on their bike, and the place you were working on it had a 3000.00 a month lease, and a 500.00 electricity bill, and another employee to answer a 250.00 telephone (bill)? the guy I quoted brings up the point that if you can't work on your bike or don't want to, it is not a priviledge for us mechanics to work on your bike, do you work for free at your profession? Didn't think so, Either do we mechanics/shop owners. did you forget all the permits for storing waste oil? permits for having an air compressor? is your workmans comp paid up? hows that insurance policy premium that covers multiple bikes, tools (your livelyhood!), I too am glad you saved money working on your bike, but don't flame the shop owner/mechanic for living the american dream!! (yea , right!)

Ok guys. i understand the "indy" or any mechanic needs to make money and he should factor his cost into his labor rate to cover.

The only thing I was not happy with was the 1.5 hours of labor he quoted.
When I can do it on the floor of my garage in .5 hours i would think he could do it on a lift just as quick.

This isn't rocket science. I use a large pan and drain all three at the same time. While I am waiting for it to drain I replace the filter ( I use a 2 liter bottle cut in half and slid under the filter to catch most of the oil from the old filter)

I fill the filter with new oil, reinstall the drain plugs with new o-rings (cheap Insurance) then fill the holes with the proper oil.

I put about 2.5 qts of engine oil in fire the bike for a minute or so and re-check and add slowly until full.

Either way i enjoy working on my own ****. It was just hotter than hell the day I wanted to change it. I would have had him do it for the .5 or .75 hourly rate but can't see paying for additional labor for no reason.

Jim
