Tried to search but no luck....

Does anyone know anything about the history of the Nightrain ?

When was the 1st year of production etc,etc ?

I think I saw something about it being a Willie G Davidson project, can't remember any details

While I don't remember the first year, I do know that they made them with EVO motors, so that puts them back as far a the '99 model year.

I visited the "Harley Davidson Museum" in Asheboro, NC recently and they had a red, white, and blue bike with a unique rear fender in the shop that they were restoring and they claimed that it was a Nightrain. It looked like something out of the 70's... however, my "The Encyclopedia Of The Harley-Davidson" only lists two versions... a 1998 and 1999 82ci EVO twin model and 2000 on Twin Cam 88B.

The 1998 model was available in Europe, only, according to the book.

The one that I saw in the "museum" had a rear fender like the early 70's sportsters.

Those are consecutive years. I have heard others say that the Nightrain was "brought back" so there may be something to the 1970's model...

It's something that I would like to know, too.

Guess I will have to wait and ride up to the new National HD Museum when it's done and find out! <grin>

That's what I would have guessed from what I saw at this museum. I can't find any documentation to support that, though.

1971 was the first year of the Superglide and it was a night train. Harley finally got around to putting a Sportster front end on the big twin. That red, white and blue paint scheme was dubbed "Sparkling America" and was a one year only deal along with the rear fender setup. Sportsters had their versions of it also. Pretty collectable.

I remember seeing that, had a pic in my archieves.A lot of 'em that survived over the years stayed mostly stock because that style didn't lend it self to customizing. It was supposed to be Wille G's first custom...

I think Evil Kenivel used these...

Still wondering what the first year of the Softail Nightrain actually was... I'm guessing somewhere between '97 and '99 ?
