Have some gas tank problems
To make matters worse, the flash pointed out rust in the tank. That is what I get for asking someone to watch my bike for 10 months while I am gone and they never fired it up. Not even once.
Anyone have the paint peeling problem or know of any additive to flush the rust out without pulling the tank off?
You could go with a commercial flushing product or simply use lacquer thinner, which works great as long as your clearcoat is not compromised. Lacquer thinner may effect the O-rings within the crossover line and petcock sealants, therefore, the tank must be pulled.
Stuff a large rag into the opening to effectively seal. Tape a corner of the rag into the opening so you can easily retrieve it.
Carefully clean around the opening with a degreasing product, then apply tape around the perimeter, extending 1/4" outside the orifice. A flexible tape works well to achieve the curvature, like 3M's Fine Line or even electrical tape. Carefully sand out and remove all debris. Reclean, and apply a thin layer of JB Weld, overlapping into the actual opening and in- between the filler neck and tank seam. Smooth out with a finger dipped in lacquer thinner. Ensure you don't build-up the JB Weld too much, preventing the fuel cap from properly sealing.
Once dried, this should prevent future curling of paint from fuel residue.
