Hello all: I need some advise from those how hate the stock softail football air cleaner cover. I am getting ready to move to a stage 1 setup on my 2008 FLSTF. My original plan was to just replace the factor air filter with a K&N drop in replacement; however I was advised by the shop which will be doing the tuning that this filter is not going to do much for me and I would be wasting money on a tune.
So I decided to go with a K&N RK-3909 intake. Installation was easy. But here is my problem. The new intake results in the football being moved outwards. This exacerbates the issue I have with my right knee constantly against the air cleaner. I have a few options, one of which would be to go with a cone-type setup such as the K&N 63-1125. But I hate the look and the wet weather issues (yes I can put a cover on it).
So here are my options:
1. Find an aftermarket cover which does not stick out as far. Any suggestions?
2. Replace intake setup with one that would not stick out so far. Any suggestions for this?
I think you are going to end up with something like the SE Heavy Breather cone which bends forward for more leg room. All other types go to a thicker(wider) filter to get more air. Also I would make sure you are adding pipes at the same time. If it breathes easier it needs to flow better as well. Then get it tuned.
Yes, I am indeed adding some slip ons. I really do not like the heavy breather look, but you are right, it may come to that. If I knew someone who could weld aluminum, I am sure the K&N back plate could be modified to move it closer to the engine.

Another option would be to get one of the floorboard relocation kits that set you feet farther out. That will give you more knee room around the air cleaner.
Thanks for the replies. I came across an air cleaner made by "Baron" that claims to not interfere with your knee. Anyone have experience with this brand?

I've seen them on Japanese cruisers, but not on a Harley. They look good though. My brother has one on his Yamaha. They cover a lot of "real estate", filling up the space between the cylinders.
