Bad vibration!
Im gonna call Hoban tomorrow. I hope they can tell me something. Im gonna get it built right when it gets built. I hate to spend the money for something that shouldn't have happened but I want it better than factory when it goes back together
Do yourself a favor and don't go off half cocked. Find out what is causing the vibration before you call Hoban. You won't be able to have an intelligent discussion with them unless you know the problem; they will ask you questions you aren't prepared to answer.
Go back and read my previous post and use that information as a guide to the way forward. When you do call Hoban, ask to speak with John Dahmer.
Hey, like I said, when you start tweaking these vtwins, **** happens. I have built several motors for myself, family and friends with great results. However, I have one of my own right now, a 107" '02 FLHT, that I have had the top end off of for the third time now. I could go on but I think you get my drift. It can be frustrating but they are machines and not complicated ones at that but, as with any machine, sometimes something just doesn't go right. When that happens, one needs to keep an open mind and see the bigger picture, to be methodical, patient and thinking ahead so that the final result is successful.
If one gets in a hurry, loses sight of the end game and gets ahead of ones self; bad things happen.
Man I sure do appreciate your input. You have sure steered me in the right direction. I was concurrency taking it to someone and paying them to deal with it. Not a dealership but a local that has a bike shop and used to work for Harley before he branched out but I think I may tackle it myself
Well I went back there this morning to get my bike on a trailer cause I wouldnt drive it home with it shaking like that and they asked if I was gonna let them do the bottom end and I told them heck no. I said if you man dont have enough sense to realize that something is wrong with this bike with it shaking like this and keep on dynoing it then I dang sure dont want him in my bottom end trying to fix it. I let them know exactly what I thought about the whole situation this morning. The more I thought about it last night the madder I got.. He ran it so long and hard with it vibrating that I have got to go back out there today and tighten everything up on it. I mean EVERYTHING!!! The turn signal fell off, saddlebag bracket fell off, console on the tank fell off, mirrors vibrated loose and the floorboads came loose. He probably did 10-15 dyno runs on this bike with it vibrating but he wouldnt stop cause "it was making good power". Thats what he told me. So there is yall "BEWARE" about Star Racing in Americus Ga.
Oh and I talked to a local mechanic and he highly recomended Darkhorse!! He said everything they do is BULLETPROOF!! Im really upset about the whole situation but at least when I get it back I will know what I have and practically a brand new motor
Albritton, sorry to read about your bad luck. I know this may seem like a water-over-the-dam question but I was noticed that you put in gear-driven cams. Did you or the installer check the crank runout beforehand? Hopefully when you get the cam cover and cam plate off, you find something other than the crank as your source of vibration. I'm supposed to put my build on a dyno run in 2 weeks and I'm starting to get paranoid because I've felt a very slight vibration in the footpegs in the last couple days. Good luck bro.
You made the right decision not letting those monkeys work on your bike.
Darkhorse = Hoban Brothers; same outfit. You can definitely take on this project yourself but be forewarned, it's a lot of work; have done it several times. Not trying to talk you out of it but once you are started, there is no turning back.
I am still suggesting that you check crank runout before you make any decisions; those early cranks are pretty durable and you need to find the source of the vibration. The sprocket on the crank that rotates the balancers is an interference press fit from the factory. They have been known to slip and throw the balancers off; the fix is welding the sprocket to the crank which also requires splitting the cases. However, if that sprocket shifted throwing the balancers off and the tech continued to run the motor on the dyno, the vibration could have affected the crank as well and both need to be addressed.
If you decide to take on the project yourself, send me a PM. I can provide moral support and advice but think it best to take that off the forum. If you out source the work, keep us posted on the progress.
