I'm looking to purchase a 2007 Heritage softail. It has 17600 miles and I'm wondering if I should look for something with fewer miles. This will be my first Harley and I don't want to make a mistake and have trouble down the road.
hopefully some one more knowledgeable than me will chime in, but way i look at it is to an extent done be afraid of mileage. If a bike is 5 yrs old with 300 miles i would be more worried vs a 5 yr old bike with 20k. Bike with 20k has been rode and prolly has had the needed services done. People that RIDE there bikes are most likely gonna take care of them.... my .02c

+1 on that! - 17,600 miles is barely broken in. Lots of HDs around with 100.000 or more miles on them.
Find out if it has had regular services done (1k, 5k, 10k).. otherwise that's 4.4k a year, which is an average rider (not really you guys who use your bikes as a Daily Driver, but people like me, who only get out on the weekends).. If the price is right, go for it.. the first thing you want to do anyways is an oil change at the minimum.. that's just a $50 job to save yourself the headache of wondering when the last time it was done.. and if you're really worried that there might be something hidden, take it in to a (knowledgeable) shop and have them do a once over on it.
I've got over 30,000 on mine without any hint of a problem at any time except for the need for tires a few times. And brake pads and normal service.
Is it at a dealer or private party. Either way I would do the normal service that was scheduled for 15,000 miles unless there is documentation that it was done. Just to be safe.
