Default starter removal

I need to take my starter off, I have a 94 Heritage softail, do I really need to remove the primary cover and jackshaft to do this?

when you put it back together, leave the stupid retaining clip off the shaft. makes the job a side of road thing if need be next time.

I'm doing the same thing right now on my 91 heritage. I was told yes but I'm having blast trying to get the one bolt behind the floorboard off. Floorboard does not want to be moved. Soaking it with some penetrating oil. How did you do?

Thanks for the info, I have not taken it off yet....I took the cables off and the end on the starter had some corrosion on it so i cleaned them and hope that fixes my problem which was it would not start all the time, it would just click like the solenoid was not engaging or a low battery but everything would test fine.

Pull the solenoid cover and clean the plunger contacts, that might be causing your problem.
