After The Wreck...2008 Crossbones
Being the person I am I did everything to make a bad situation as positive as possible. Knowing I had little money (I was between jobs) I canceled out my $500 deductible by 1. Taking a $250 credit from the insurance company instead of having them replace my left saddle bag because of some VERY MINOR scuffs that it received and 2. Providing my own primary cover that I had bought on eBay for .99 cents that I had planed to use for powdercoating. This almost covered the entire remaining $250 of my deductible. Finally, I had them paint my Heritage Springer front fender for me and planned to pay for it out of pocket (my stock fender was undamaged) and was quoted $200. That is what several painters had quoted me before so I said yes, figuring that it would match the tank better which was being repaired and repainted at the same time. Since the insurance was paying for new pinstripe decals from Harley, I asked for old style emblems instead which cost less and let the balance of that go towards the small remaining amount of my deductible. When the tins got back from the painter, I bitched about a spec in the finish on the tank and on the fender. Although very hard to notice, I held the dealership to their promise of "Making everything BETTER than it was before the accident." Rather than making them paint the tins over, they offered to drop the price of the fender paint to $0, a number that I found easy to deal with.
All that was left once their part was done was for me to FINALLY install that front fender which had been sitting in a box in my garage for over a year! Also, I had to install the tank emblems myself because they had to be slightly bent, something the techs at H-D did not want to do. I gently gave them a slight curve over my knee and that was that! Although she is still a work in progress (I have more plans for the exhaust and the lights, both front and rear as well as some wide H-D beach bars), she is starting to look like the vision I had when I began to mod her. It was really nice out today with the weather in the low 60's here in central Florida so my 80+ mile one way commute to Orlando was extra nice and the ultra clear sky prompted me to stop and take some photos to share with you guys.
I haven't done anything to my Bones that lots of other guys haven't already done but I was pretty stoked about getting this far with her. You have to understand that on the other end of the spectrum, I might not have been able to keep her since I had until very recently been unemployed for the last 4 months and I have two more kids than I did before I purchased her new in 2008.
FYI: I will be posting a HOW TO thread on swapping that front fender in the next few days to accompany my thread on swapping the rear fender. Hope you guys dig it.
Thanks to all who wished me and my Black Betty well during our down time!
