Its an 09 Fatboy. Any thoughts?
I just changed the oil and filter on my '07 Fat Boy (96 ci) a few days ago (just drained the oil and changed the filter, no scavenger). It took slightly less than 3 quarts to refill. As others have mentioned, check the oil level with the engine hot while the bike is on the kick (jiffy) stand. The owner's manual for the '07 says to get the engine hot by riding the bike, not by letting it idle. I have read that elsewhere also, and so that's what I do before changing the oil and before making the final level check after the change.

By the way, when I drain the oil while the bike is on the jiffy stand, I let it drain until it stops dripping, and then I straighten the bike which allows a bit more to drain out.

if you want to clean out the oil system out and don't mind wasting a filter and a quart or 3 of oil (do it once a year, especially you northern boys that garage your bike for the winter)...

Change the oil as you would normally, but use about of 1/3 bottle of Seafoam first, then top off with oil. Ride around for an hour or 3 and then change the oil AND filter again, this time without using Seafoam. Seafoam says you can leave it in, ie, you don't HAVE the change the oil the 2nd time, but I like to use this proceedure as a cleaning of the system and then run fresh after it breaks up any residue and lets the filter catch it.

warm up motor, sit a little to cool pipes, drain oil, Clean and replace plug to correct TQ. Remove filter, (i pour 5 ozs or so in filter and let soak in) replace new filter.
pout about 2 1/2 qts of oil in tank. check and fill to middle of dip stick.

clean up mess....

Oil light works off a pressure switch, no or very low pressure and light comes on. Doesn't matter how much oil you have as long as proper pressure is going to the bearings lite stays off.
