Ok, my latest problem is the oil. I am changing out the oil tank and will need to drain it.
My question(s) should I just reuse the oil?
I planned to change it, have a new filter here. The trouble is I can't start the bike. I can't flush it, can't even heat up the oil to get it to drain better.
To make matters worse, I don't have any idea what is in my bike. Synthetic, weight, etc - I have no clue what is in there.
Should I reuse the oil and do a change/scavange when the bike is back on the road?
Seems like most people use 20/50 around here- btw.
I'm not very mechanically inclined myself...but damn brother...reuse oil?! That doesn't even sound like a good idea even if you knew what was in there.
I was thinking of reusing only because of mixing. If I just drain the tank and swap it out there will be a good amount of oil left in the motor? (cold motor at that)
I'm worried about mixing; should I be? If it is synthetic and I put in normal oil what will happen?
Is it better to run what us there fir a few days once the bike is back in the road and run a scavage system and change out the oil then?
I have no idea when it was changed- 2004 with 6300 miles. I've had it since Feb and put very little miles on it. (has been apart for months!)
It needs to be changed but now on a cold engine or later when it is back on the road?
You can mix synth and Dino but the lesser oil change interval would apply. Personally I would buy some penzoil 20w50. (cheap). Run it for a couple hundred miles then make the switch to synth. Re-using old oil. Come on man. Would you re-use a condom. Jmo
Change it now. You're changing the oil tank - that's the only oil you'd get out of it with a conventional oil change anyway. Although I am aware of the scavange systems for oil changes, very few oil changes are actually done that way.
If it would make you feel better about the mixing of different oils, then do a second change shortly after you finish the oil tank swap.
I can't leave it- the tank is coming out and needs to be drained.
So if there are no issues with mixing then it us no big deal to just change what's in the tank. I had heard mixing oil and synthetic was bad news. Guess not.
I'll change it again after I put a few miles on it.
