A neat trick that someone posted on here some time ago was to fold your left arm (right hand on on the throttle don't cha know) across your chest. If that reduces the buffeting enough to meet your needs, then the lowers will work for you. I have also tried lowers (AKA Fangs) and they do help a bit, but not as much, for me anyway, as changes to the height of the windshield.

Do the fork mounted wind deflectors really help for the wind buffeting, I was under the impression it was for deflection off your leg area...

YES! On my '09 FLSTF with the shorter OEM detachable windshield the buffeting was horrible, gave me a headache my helmet bounced around so much. With the "Fangs" the buffeting is gone.

Lower winder deflectors make an unbelievable difference in reduction of buffetting that can make long distance travel unpleasant.
