I'm considering a detachable windshield for my 2011 Softail Deluxe to help cut down on the wind buffeting of upper torso and head at highway speeds. After reading a number of posts on the forum it seems that people have varying results depending on type/size of the windshield and their height. I'm 6' tall. Any suggestions on best type and size of windshield would be greatly appreciated!
Most people like to have the top of the windshield about nose high so that they're looking over the top. It's high enough to divert rocks and bugs and rain over your head, and you don't have to look through a wet windshield in the rain. Sit on the bike like you normally ride and have someone take a measurement for you.
I just ordered a new windshield through ceebaileys they give you instructions for correct measurement. Im 6'4" and ordered a 20" high 22" wide shield.. very quick delivery for a custom make.
Holepuncher is dead on. That's why the shields come in a couple of different sizes.
As these are quick release windshields, you might consider going to your local MOCO dealer and getting someone from the Part Dept pull a couple of different sizes from their floor models and you'll know exactly which one you need.
I'm 6' exactly (32" inseam) and use two different windscreens: a 17.5" and a 20". The 17.5" is the stock windscreen and the 20" is actually cut down 2" from the tall HD windscreen. I use the 17.5" in summer. It has a very minor (and I do mean minor) amount of helmet buffeting. The 20" is my "winter" (such as winters are here in LA) which is almost completely still air. But in the summer that can be a disadvantage when it gets over 90*F. All the above measurements are from the top of the headlight cutout to the top of the windscreen.
You might also want to look into the fork mounted wind deflectors to go with the windshield. Just a windshield causes helmet buffeting that the wind deflectors do a good job of eliminating.
Your best bet is test ride a 2011-12 heritage that has the stock windshield. I belive it is a 17", from that you will know it you want taller or shorter. That is how i ended up with my 19" for my Fatboy lo.
