is shorter kickstand required?

You need a shorter kick-stand only when you lower also the front. I've had my fatboy lowered to the maximum (rear) and no problem to park it.

Harley sells a shorter version of the OEM, and there are others that fix to the frame right by the swingarm. Can't remember the manufacturer of those other brands.

The deluxe stand is lower by 1" as the bike comes lowered from the factory. Fatboy lo too. I'll bet they both use the same one.
