Default Oil Change 2011 Fatboy ??

Well I just changed the oil myself for the first time in my 2011 Fatboy and have a question. I only had to fill the bike with a little less than three quarts to read full on the dipstick even thought the manual says 3.5. The bike was hot and on it's kickstand. Anyone else find this normal? Thanks!

Normal. Check it again after the next ride.

The reason for this is some of the oil stays in the crank case on a dry sump engine like a Harley.

Yea, there's no better way to mess up all that nice fresh and possibly expensive synthetic oil then by mixing and contaminating it with a half a quart of old cruddy oil. Read one of those Amsoil papers about how mixing old oil with new diminishes the stability of the new oil to not last as long as it was made for. Even Harley has in the manual that if you add different oil in an emergency that you should drain and replace as soon as possible! Why there isn't a drain plug on the bottom of the sump amazes me. Does Harley actually have engineers working for them?
It drives me crazy too. So I bought that oil scavenger thing and now I can sleep better at night knowing that I changed all the oil in my bike.

Try this: watch the video and become a believer.

That's normal. Mine usually takes about 2 3/4 quarts to get it where I like it. Just don't ever put too much in or you'll find it all over the place on your next ride. The crankcase does have a drain plug but it's not supposed to be removed, only during a lower end rebuild.

A good synthetic will last 10,000 miles. Don't worry about a little bit left over when you change it at 5000.

Normal,

I drain the oil, then put 4-5 ozs in new filter and let it soak in and put some oil on the gasket, then pull filter, clean up base for new filter, install new filter. Then add 2 1/2 qts to oil tank, start her up for 3-4 mins. shut down, wait 5-10 mins and then fill tank to 1/2 up between low and full. clean up mess..
