From the pictures I can see the Hawaii safety inspection stickers on the back. I can't tell the year from the yellow stickers, but the inspection was done in December. That accounts for the bike being close to the ocean for a while. Also what base is on the red dod sticker? MCBH Kaneohe gets more rain then say NAVSTA Pearl Harbor. Then again Schofield Barracks get's decent rain and temp differential from what I hear, but it's more in the middle of the island up by north shore. It comes down to the fact that it's your money. Me personally if I had a little more knowledge about bikes I'd go for it. Like said above somewhere some of that rust can be wire brushed off, sand blast down the chrome and paint over the top until you can get it back to the states or find cheap replacement parts locally. Also good advice (from above again) on finding out what it would take to bring it back to the states before buying it. Would suck to buy it, fix it up, and then get told you can't ship it home.

You could bring it back to the states and register it.

If you want to ride in Japan, I'd pass. Since AAFES doesn't sell Harley's for local delivery in Japan since 2008, and the yen rate is crazy off base, there is quite a demand for US spec Harleys on all the bases. If that bike could be registered here, I can't believe somebody hasn't done it. Good Luck!
If it is an 86 it should not have any problems getting JCI'ed. For alot of the above reasons I'd give it a go. Good Luck!!!

Default Rust Bucket

Looks like a lot of problems,... if your bored and have a ton of cash your not attached to, it will certainly keep you busy.

Ok, VIN is :

1HD1BJL18GY018653

Bike has its last base sticker from NAVSTA PH... pearl harbor. its last registration sticker expired December 07 from Hawaii.

panheadrich- exactly what I was thinking of doing. I have storage and bike lifts at the base hobby shop, as well as a media blaster. sand+ wrinkle black and good to go. I also agree with your sentiment of how rewarding it is bringing something like this back to life. My Dad and I did something similar with a 66 chevelle before I joined the navy. I Love that car.

mechanically, yes I have a lot of time to play with it. if it doesn't work out I can just have it junked through the base.

I know it needs wheels and tires, but I need to see if the motor even runs. I've talked to several people over the last few days. it belonged to a chief that left a year ago. it's abandoned!

notsonewb- motorcycles, especially bike FROM the states are considered as household goods during a move. no problems there.

Nameless and 07FXSToki - I agree with both of you!

I'll let you know what happens, but I think I'm going to have a go at it. This is a perfect time for me, and I feel like its exactly what I need.

If nothing else, it's a great education. You could also part it out on the web.

I know it's moot point, but unless you are looking at the registration or plates the sticker on the back of the bike in the pictures is for safety not registration. If you decide to pick her up good luck on fixing her up.

I would think it would be cheaper to buy a new bike compared to the money you would spend trying to restore that rust bucket.
