It won't hurt anything, you want to set the rings early. Second it's under warranty now so if something happens (which it won't) it's covered
Ok yeah, good point. Thing is... that mototune guy doesn't tell you for how many miles you're supposed to drive it hard/back-off/drive hard. That's what he is saying right? Kinda, give it a good ammt of throttle, vary the speed, downshift/slow-down pretty quickly, rinse and repeat. Just don't know for how long? 500 miles still?
And when he says change the oil after 20miles... he doesn't mention whether you change the oil filter too. Just the engine oil, or engine/trans/primary? I mean, it's kind of a vague description of the process if you're doing this on the street not a dyno like he also described.
I've only ridden it about 10-15miles from the dealer to home last night, I didn't shift out of 5th, I kept RPM's basically between 2300-2700.
Is it too late for me to 'set the rings' as the Mototune describes?
All stickers/reflectors/Tank Emblems will peel off with a little heat from a blow dryer and a little laquar thinner on the residue glue followed by some Windex. The frame stickers can be carefully removed and placed in your owners manual if you like.
when i picked up my 2011 blackline from the dealership a few weeks ago they told me the most important thing was to vary rpm/speed a lot, said if i want to see what its got then give er...just dont keep any one speed/rpm for very long.
it was a 2 hour ride to get the bike home from the dealership, had my wife behind me in the car and personally i woundnt want to be driving behind me for that ride cause i kept speeding up and slowing down...even if i wanted to keep an approximate speed i would run up or down a gear.
almost 3000 km and everything seems fine....except for the deer i hit and the asshat that backed into the front end of my bike in a parking lot when i wasnt there
Ok... so basically... common between the two sides of the fence regarding break-in is... don't lug the motor along. It's better to give her more gas than have it just sort of moping along.
Oil change after the first 25 or 50 miles really won't hurt anything, then go in again for the 1,000 mile checkup from HD.
Don't dog the $hit out of it, but don't be a complete granny with it.

yeah wtf, this is sound advice, i was not told much, just to keep it well below 3000rpm until 500 miles.... im kinda pissed. good thing it was only 11miles to home. tomorrow when it's nice out i'll be riding a lot, varying speed, in the countryside!
does anyone have any objections that I get the first 500 miles in the next couple days? Should the break-inbe spread over more time? Again, keeping speed varied.
It's interesting to see as many opinions about breaking in a new bike as I hear opinions about the best way to break in a new rifle! All sound advice........just use common sense.
Congrats on the new sled. Been down that road myself. Sport bikes when I was young to a Buell to a sportster and then to a Dyna Super Glide and recently went to a Heritage. Thought i might miss the Dyna but I rarely do. Biggest regret is that I didn't just go softail to begin with also. Put a lot of money into the Dyna that someone else is enjoying now. Enjoy the new scoot.
Great! rode the new ride for about 70 miles today. When I came back, I noticed oil splatters on the exhaust heat shield, on the oil tank just under the dipstick, and under the lower quick-release oil line. It's not a lot of oil, and it doesn't seem to be leaking or dripping from anywhere. It looks like a few oddly-placed oil splatters.
took it to the same dealer where I bought it on weds. It's spending the night there for a checkup.
I'm pretty pissed, frustrated, and wanting a cigarette since I just quit on sunday! Haha. Thanks for reading.
