Tip number 1. ALWAYS ask the owner to pull off the seat so you can look at the wiring. This alone will tell you a lot about the bike.
Here is a pic under my seat. Lots of changes, now when you see this start asking questions.

Seeking 1st time buyer advice for used Heritage Softail Classic
Requesting the privilege of tapping into the knowledge base of the brotherhood that are willing to share.
First of all, I've been in learning mode awhile, so I've acquired a favorable amount of knowledge to date, yet I'm humble enough to admit I have more to learn. Even though I literally was born at night, it wasn't last night. I'm an above average observer able to read between the lines and don't take kindly to being taken advantage of.
I know full well they are meant to be ridden on the regular, so when considering average mileage/yr, what is too little vs too much?
Can I be confident a dealer isn't going to sell a machine that doesn't need immediate attention? I'm looking to add to my notes regarding inspection points.
I know each purchase will be unique to its own situation, so I presume I should be prepared to negotiate, and/or walk away.
I've seen some very nice 07's, 11's, 13's and 14's while doing my research. My budget is in the 12K range.
Anyone care to share their thoughts on top priorities to question the dealership about?
All replies welcome.
Much thnx brothers, ride safe.
A dealer is a good place to overpay and get average.
YEP !!! They hit it with lemon pledge, make it all shiny, and it has a worn out rear tire
Or other unforeseen things.
Buy low !!! Sell high !!! Sales mngrs say that a hundred times a day
Consider what they do when trying to sell new with a trade in. I got top dollar for my trade in. How are they going to make any money on it? They sure aren't going to stick any into it that they don't have to.

your top dollar trade-in was actually taken off the over-inflated new price and the bs freight, prep, and doc fees.
