So I have limited space, but want to keep bike in garage this winter. Is there a lift or stand that the kids won't be able to tip the bike over that doesn't break the bank? I don't need bike off the ground, just as long as it is upright. Thanks!
Sears sells a variety of lifts for under $200 under the Craftsman and OTC brand names. You can get the cheaper ones for around $100, which is what I purchased. It's a bottle jack so I would be a little hesitant to keep it on the lift all winter unless you check it from time to time to make sure it isn't slipping. Mine loses air very slowly if I keep the bike on the lift for an extended period of time.
There are several "positive locking" points, but I don't trust them. Difficult to explain in words, but if you take a look at the cheaper lifts, you'll see why.
So, I use the lift for maintenance and recently purchased a wheel chock (got the H-D one on sale for about $180) for parking it, including winter storage. Keeping the bike upright (whether on a lift or chock) will give you some extra room, which I needed for my very small two-car garage which has my wife's car, lawn equipment and lotsa kids' stuff.
If you go with a lift, just make sure you check the clearance. A couple I looked at wouldn't go low enough to fit under my bike, especially when considering the frame protectors.
A bike jack or lift will take up quite a bit of room, more than just putting the bike on its side stand. A wheel dock with triangular tie-downs takes up little room...
They do have a center stand that takes up no room; for an 08 and up is part # 98959-08
As mentioned, I have the H-D chock. The bike is very sturdy without tie downs (even the description says no straps necessary, and H-D would err on the side of safety, especially since they sell tie downs). I have no concerns at all with two young kids playing in the garage.
watch different ad's as well. I got a very nice 350.00 lift for 100 bucks! craigslist. Works great, no room, safe while upright and most of all fits since I also have it lowered. I am with you, hope it's a short winter....
