why do you wish you replaced your whole starter, did it fail again?
...No, it still working great. I felt it was quite labor intensive pulling the starter and really don't wish to do it again. Also, I have a history of keeping vehicles for a long time - bikes or cars.
Still got my 68 Dodge Charger from 1976.

hey guys, sorry i havent responded. ive had a million other projects going on (**** breaking), but now im ready to get this starter done especially since the parts from the bike are taking up half my bench.

ive been calling around and these are my current prospects, as i dont wanna pay the local harley place 500 bucks...

i was skeptical since they were so cheap, but i called the some of them and they mainly said that they were cheap because all they do is starters and they arent cheaply made and they havent had any come back. they also come with a 1 year warrantly.

here they are
this is the one pops2ride sent me, its along the lines of the others below. its a 1.75kW for $171
http://www.bkrider.com/bkrider/skuse...eria=C01003081

this one is a 1.4kW for $160 (scroll part way down)
http://www.crowescustomcycles.com/starters.htm

this one is a 1.2kW for $115, but they said they would be getting more 1.75's in soon and they werent much more...
http://www.rareelectrical.com/p-9796...fltc-fxrp.aspx

let me know what you guys think of these

now for my responses....
pops2ride- thanks, i may buy that one. what is a manual solenoid button? so i can make sure whatever one i get has it.

big H- i hear ya.... id like to clean mine and try it, but since it was a pain to get it out (remove oil tank, primary cover etc) well not a huge pain, but for a 1.75kW under 200 i think its worth it. and its winter so i have no rush

nick- i keep my stuff forever too.. my father gave me this bike and i will never sell it.

rickiemack- i dont know what the compression release is, let me know and ill check. i will try calling them 2moro, as well as all *****

hey guys,

i made some calls today and i think im ready to buy i just wanted someone to verify im making a good decision....

a bunch of places had them for 130-170 but they only had a one year warranty.

i called all ***** and they said 320 for a black one with a lifetime warranty. they also said that i should only get a 1.4kW because the stock starter (1.2) turned it over fine, and that bigger isnt always better. that the 1.75 would just be a waste of money, and drain the battery more.

i told that to bk rider on the phone and the guy told me he could get me the all ***** starter (the 320 dollar one) for $220. that it was black, 1.4kW, same part number. and that i still get the lifetime warranty i just need to save the receipt (which is no problem).

to me the 220 with lifetime warranty seemed like the right choice. any confirmation? thanks

I've r&r'd car starters but knock-on-wood, never a motorcycle starter. Getting that all-***** starter at 1/3 off with a lifetime warranty seems like a no-brainer. Good luck.

You're gonna get a lot of advice it looks like. It seems like you have the ability to rebuild your own. I would strongly recommend, therefore, that you get a shop manual. I agreed with the solenoid clean up while on the bike. If that isn't the issue, then I would locate the brushes but don't buy them yet. (assuming you want to stay on the save money path). Remove the oil tank and starter as explained in the shop manual. Have a growl test done on your armature. If that passes, recut the contact surface with a hacksaw blade, get your new brushes, and then rebuild the solenoid while you are there... or if you can't get the parts, replace it. Put it all back in and pray that it isn't due to bad wiring, a bad battery, or a bad switch all along because then you will be really mad.

Or... start by borrowing a nearly new battery from a buddy if yours isn't new (I don't care what the voltmeter says) and see if that fixes the problem... oops... forgot... you already started pulling it down. (That was what was wrong with my starter.)

the starter is already off. i tried 2 batteries and a battery boost pack before pulling it. wiring was all checked as well. i think ill buy the 220 all ***** starter, throw it on, and save my old starter for a rebuild at some point to have as a spare.

Default Softail starter advice needed

Tony, sorry it took me so long to respond. The manual solenoid
button will replace the outboard cover on the solenoid. It gives
you the ability to manually operate the solenoid. My starter from
BKrider came with one but haven't needed to use it yet. Its a
life saver if your battery fails to turn over your motor.
I know some of the guys on here have rebuilt their starters but
its just to much of a hassle to pull the starter to take that risk,
IMHO.
I have a 95" EVO motor in my bike with the BKrider 1.4KW
starter and have not had any problems. Good luck with your
task.
