2003 Heritage Springer Restoration
Hey everyone!
I recently picked up a 2003 Heritage Springer, from a smaller private dealer in NC. Being in Colorado, I hadn't seen it till it arrived. Let me preface by saying that I am a neat freak with the bikes. My 2010 CVO Street Glide is cleaner than showroom new when I'm done washing it.
The 03 HS needed some attention. It wasn't in bad shape, but I recognized that it wasn't up to my standards of how a bike should be. This is the fun part!
After looking things over, I realized that the bike had fallen over on the left side. Since I was going to replace the exhaust, I didn't really care about the slip-on being scuffed. I also replaced the footboard mounting bracket, as there were some scuffs there too. Cheap enough to do.
New foot boards, shift linkage, shift and brake levers, and a slew of other chrome bolt on's. After 8 years of use, lots of these parts were getting worn out pretty well.
I'm stripping this bike down to a solo bike. My SG is more than plenty for my wife and I to run down long trips.
After pulling the stock passenger pad, I noticed wear on the back fender where the screw attaches. Also, there are small pebble shards embedded into the paint where the license plate bracket came out of the tombstone light.
Still to do are the bars....LA Choppers Nice Curves (1.25" dia, 16", chrome, on their way from Dr. VTwin), Carlini Design Fat Springer Adapter Plate, Harley 1.7" risers. I also scored a new 100th Anniversary top clamp for $65 on eBay. Not bad for the obsolete part. I've seen them over $130. Side-mount plate and swingarm bag still need to be ordered.
Enough of the rambling, here are some pictures. It's a work in progress, so thought I would share the progress.
Wrenching on the bike has been more fun than I could imagine.
Off the truck, day 1:

Beginning to strip it down, this is when I decided to really strip it down:

New pipes, still in the box. V&H BSS, with straight tips ready to go on as well. Staying in the box until the bars go on, so I don't have to pull them back off to pull the transmission cover for the clutch cable:

New left-side footboard bracket, swept-wing pan style, insert, shift lever, peg, and linkage:

Minus the rear fender:

Drilled the rear fender (4 holes) to add the Deluxe turn signal bar. No more fender strut signals. This was nerve-wracking:

New rear brake lever, chrome rear master cylinder, brake pedal:

Pulled the front caliper and wheel, just to take off the fender:

The HS and the SG. Inner is done at the painter's, so I can get it on, my Yaffe Monkey Bagger Bars, and button her up soon too:

Yrs ago didn't like the Springers,, But,, now as I get older I really like them.
Enjoy her as I have the feeling I know U will..
After dropping the tins off yesterday, I am going to have them fill in the hole on the rear fender for the passenger pad. Also, they're going to see if the light bracket for the 2008 Street Glides will fit the rear fender. The holes I drilled can be filled if needed. This way, it includes the plate mount and lights as well.
I really am happy with the way things are going on this bike. It's really going to look good when it gets back together.
Last night, the bars showed up too:

When I first started to consider a second bike (I traded a 2009 Deluxe with < 800 miles for my SG), I was leaning towards a Deluxe. Having the HS, I'm really happy that I decided to go this route.
Thanks for looking!
